Water Everywhere
A large proportion of our bodies are made up of water. So water is everywhere - even in our body! A person can live for several days without food but just a matter of 3-4 days without fluids—the most important of which is water. This being the case, it is critical to our health to drink at least 8 glasses (8oz) of fluids per day. It is recommended by health experts that the majority of this fluid should be water.
Here are a few ways that water helps our bodies to work:
- The kidneys and urinary system filter out impurities and toxins in our bodies. The more water you drink the more efficient this filtering system will be.
- The blood is composed of a large percentage of water.
- Water helps us to digest our food.
- Important organs in the body, such as the eyes, are lubricated by body fluids made up of water.
- Our joints cannot work without fluid to lubricate them.
These are just a few ways that our body uses water to keep us functioning.
Not just any water will do: Due to industrialization and other contaminants in the ground, water is not as pure as it should be. To improve the quality of our drinking water extra precautions can be used. The 3 most common are:
- Filtered
- Distilled
- Bottled
Filtering your water: Filters that attach to your faucet are used to trap the impurities in the water. Filters can get rid of many impurities from the water, but not everything is removed by this method. Bacteria are not removed from the water by filters.
Distilled water does remove 99% of contaminants from water as well as any bacteria. At first, distillers were largely commercial but now convenient and cost effective portable water distillers are available. You can use these at home or even take them with you when you travel.
Bottled water is available in all grocery stores. This is a cheap alternative that is used by many people to upgrade the quality of the water they drink.
However you choose to improve the water you drink there is no doubt about the fact that water is vital to our health. Without it there would be no life on earth. Given the importance of water we should appreciate its value to us and the vital role it plays in our health and well being.
Unfortunately few people realize the benefits of pure water and will more readily reach for a soda or sweet drink before they consider a cool glass of water. Water will quench your thirst faster than other fluids, especially soda. It will help you cool off faster than any other drink, and, as seen by the above facts, is a critical factor for your good health.
Water will also help you to lose weight and is recommended in many weight loss programs. It fills you up and acts as an appetite suppressant. Water will also help you clear not only impurities but also unwanted fats from the body. |
